Phylogeny and revision of the bee genus Rhinocorynura Schrottky (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Augochlorini), with comments on its female cephalic polymorphism. A taxonomic revision and a phylogeny for the species of Rhinocorynura are provided. Six species are recognized: R. briseis, R. crotonis, R. inflaticeps and R. vernoniae stat. nov., the latter removed from synonymy with R. inflaticeps, in addition to two newly described species, R. brunnea sp. nov. and R. viridis sp. nov. Lectotypes for Halictus crotonis Ducke, 1906 and Halictus inflaticeps Ducke, 1906 are hereby designated. Another available name included in Rhinocorynura, Corynuropsis ashmeadi Schrottky, 1909, is removed from the genus and treated as species inquerenda in Augochlorini. Rhinocorynura is... |

Xanthopedia iheringii (Friese, 1899) and Lissopedia globulosa (Friese, 1899). When necessary lectotypes are proposed and redescriptions provided. Paratetrapedia (Xanthopedia) tricolor Michener & Moure, 1957, is considered a synonym of Xanthopedia iheringii, and Arhysoceble melampoda Moure, 1948, of Arhysoceble picta (Friese, 1899). |

Male Neotropical orchid bees (Euglossini) collect volatile chemicals from floral and non-floral sources and store then in specialized hind tibial structures. The ultimate causes of euglossine fragrance collection remain a mystery. Recent evidence suggests that odoriferous substances play a role in euglossine courtship and serve as indicator of male genetic quality. Males of Eulaema nigrita were observed robbing scents from the detached hind legs of a conspecific male E. nigrita in Belém, Brazil. The hind leg seemed to have been detached during fights between males, since one male was missing a hind leg where the observation was made. This behavior appears to be common among males of E. nigrita since more than one case was observed on the same day. The... |

ABSTRACT The Apidae community structure was studied in a vegetated area of coastal dunes in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Collections were performed monthly from August 2009 to July 2010. The collection methods included the use of entomological nets on flowers and Moerike traps. In total, 1211 individuals belonging to 59 species were collected. The pattern of abundance and richness was similar to those found in Maranhão and other coastal areas of northeastern Brazil. The bees were present throughout the year, with an increase in the number of individuals during the rainy season. Constant and dominant species included Trigona sp. gr. fulviventris, Apis mellifera, Plebeia alvarengai, Centris aenea, Xylocopa cearensis, and Centris caxiensis. |

Parasarus Ruz, 1993 comprises small black bees (3-5 mm long) endemic to xeric regions of South America, mainly along of the Andean Cordillera. Prior to this study, the genus included only the type-species P. atacamensis Ruz, 1993 (from northern Chile) which has mesoscutum strongly reticulated and inner hind tibial spur curved apically. In this paper, a taxonomic revision of Parasarus is presented and two new species are described: P. specularis sp. nov. (from central to northwest Argentina) diagnosed mainly by pygidial plate of female extremely acute apically and labral plate yellow in male; and P. spiniventris sp. nov. (only recorded from central portion of Chile) diagnosed by antennal socket below middle of face, subantennal area as long as broad,... |

ABSTRACT The family Convolvulaceae is widely distributed in tropical regions, mainly in open areas. Convolvulaceae flowers are characterized mainly by being beautiful and ephemeral, attracting many flower visitors that belong to different taxonomic groups. This work aimed to investigate the interactions between insects and flowers of Jacquemontia bracteosa (Convolvulaceae), focusing on the pollination efficiency, in an area in the Brazilian semiarid. From November 2011 to October 2012, floral biology of J. bracteosa was investigated as well as the flower visit frequency, behavior, and morphology of floral visitors. The flowers of J. bracteosa are white, showy and open early in the morning, lasting less than 12 hours, with fruiting occurring both by selfing... |

ABSTRACTThe present catalogue lists the bee types (Hymenoptera, Apidaes.l.) deposited in the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (MZSP). The Hymenoptera collection of the MZSP is one of the most important collections for the Brazilian and Neotropical faunas, holding relatively large number of types and represented taxa. The Apidae collection includes a total of 473 type-specimens (101 holotypes, 30 lectotypes, 190 paratypes, 34 paralectotypes, and 119 syntypes) that represent 257 species currently classified in 88 genera, 22 tribes, and five subfamilies (Andreninae, Apinae, Colletinae, Halictinae, and Megachilinae). Label data and additional information from the MZSP registers, literature sources, and taxonomic remarks are given, including... |

A new species of Xylocopa Latreille, 1802, and notes on Xylocopa transitoria Pérez and X. mordax Smith (Hymenoptera, Apoidea). Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) orthogonaspis sp. nov. (Brazil, Amazonas) is described. It is a remarkable species from the Amazonian Region easily recognized by the strong and sharp right angle between upper and posterior portions of the scutellum; the wings are slightly brown with a brassy hue and a little vinaceous apex. Some notes to separate Xylocopa (N.) orthogonaspis sp. nov. from X. (N.) transitoria Pérez, 1901, and X. (N.) mordax Smith, 1874, are given. Xylocopa (N.) submordax Cockerell, 1935, on the other hand, is considered as a new synonym of X. (N.) transitoria Pérez, 1901. |
